DATEX II
Introduction
DATEX II is the European standard for recording and exchanging traffic data, describing a format and protocol for suppliers and consumers to exchange this data. The standard provides generic solutions to enable its use in various environments and for different purposes. To ensure clear interpretation of the data content, additional agreements have been made regarding the use and definition of elements. These agreements are referred to as the Dutch profile of DATEX II.
Background of DATEX II
Delivering European transport policy in line with the European Commission's ITS action plan requires coordination of traffic management and development of seamless pan-European services. With the aim of supporting sustainable mobility in Europe, the European Commission has been supporting the development of information exchange for several years, primarily among the actors in the road traffic management domain. In the road sector, the DATEX II standard has been developed for information exchange between traffic control centers, traffic information centers, and service providers, and it serves as the reference for applications developed over the past 10 years. The second generation DATEX II specification now also opens the door wide for all actors in the traffic and travel information sector.
Over the past decade, significant investments have been made in both traffic control and information centers and in a quantum shift in the monitoring of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). This is in line with the goals of the EasyWay program for safer roads, fewer traffic jams, and a better environment. Collecting information is just part of the story – to get the most out of the investment data, it needs to be exchanged with other centers and, in more recent developments, with those developing pan-European services directly for road users. DATEX II was originally designed and developed as an exchange mechanism for traffic and travel data by a European task force established to standardize the interface between traffic control and information centers. With the new generation of DATEX II, it has become the reference for all applications requiring access to dynamic traffic and travel-related information in Europe. The goal of the DATEX II organization is for DATEX II to be THE information model for road traffic and travel information in Europe by 2020.
