Location Reference VILD/ALERT-C
This section of NDW Docs contains information about VILD in general and the application and interpretation of VILD as a location referencing system.
Traffic Information Location Database (VILD)
The VILD is the base file for location referencing when generating traffic information and is used by parties in the traffic information chain, including the National Road Traffic Portal (NDW), Rijkswaterstaat Traffic Center Netherlands (VCNL), and service providers (e.g., ANWB). Rijkswaterstaat and NDW use the VILD in applications that are mainly focused on generating traffic information (travel time information, traffic jam length, measures taken by traffic management, accidents, works, etc.), as well as in policy reports or supporting datasets. Since the VILD is freely available and usable for purposes beyond traffic information, the database is also used for other applications.
The VILD is designed, organized, and optimized for location referencing in traffic and travel information. Consistent naming of locations on the road network is essential to provide recognizable and understandable messages about the current traffic situation to road users.
The VILD contains three main types of location types:
- Areas
- Lines
- Points
Coverage of the predefined VILD location table
The VILD, as a predefined location table, covers the following roads:
- All A and N roads;
- Roads that are part of the Regional Traffic Management (RVM) network1 and do not have an A or N number;
- Roads that are considered relevant for traffic information due to safety and/or public order;
- Foreign roads considered relevant for traffic flows in the Netherlands or cross-border management for providing traffic information.
Application of VILD as a Location Referencing System
For each type of NDW information, it is specified which location types and locations from the VILD may be used.
The allowed use of location types depends on the type of information provided.
!!! warning "Only the Point location type is allowed" For speeds, intensities, and travel times, the following location types may not be used:
P2.1, P3.3 t/m P3.12, P3.15, P3.18, P3.20 t/m P3.27, P3.29 t/m P3.37, P3.46 en P5.0 t/m P5.5
Voor wachtrijen mag enkel gebruik gemaakt worden van de volgende locatietypen:
P1.11, P1.12, P1.3, P1.9, P3.1, P3.2, P3.40, P3.41, P3.43 en P3.45
!!! warning "Location types Areas and Points are allowed" In principle, all location types within Point and Area are allowed, except for P2.1 Hectometer jump.
See the detail pages per type of NDW information for specific clarification on application and interpretation.
